What has inspired me to start working on custom portraits?

As a children’s book illustrator, I mostly work on illustrations for my books or on illustrations for a children’s book portfolio.

However, when my family was going through pandemic and all the challenges it brought, I had a strong desire to make a portrait of myself with my young kids. Even while I was working on it, I knew I was making something special and unique. I had no agenda, no expectations, just the desire to paint that piece.

The response to that first painting was overwhelming. Friends, family and complete strangers reached out with this feedback: the portrait was intense, sweet, emotional and heartwarming.

That gave me an idea to start working on commissioned portraits and bring the same qualities into the portraits: emotion, connection and warmth.
